Mumbai, commonly referred to as Bombay, was the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra and the country’s de facto financial hub until 1995. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region, home to more than 23 million people and the sixth-most populated metropolitan area in the world, is centered in Mumbai (2.3 crores). Mumbai has a deep natural harbour and is located on India’s west coast along the Konkan coast. Mumbai was designated an Alpha World City in 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There used to be Koli populations that spoke Marathi on the seven islands that make up Mumbai. The seven islands of Bombay were ruled by different indigenous groups for many years before being given to the Portuguese Empire and then, in 1661, to the East India Company as part of Catherine Braganza’s dowry for her marriage to Charles II of England. The Hornby Vellard project, which involved reclaiming the territory between the seven islands from the sea, changed Bombay around the middle of the 18th century. The reclamation project finished in 1845, also saw the building of significant roads and railways, transforming Bombay into a significant seaport on the Arabian Sea. Bombay had economic and educational growth in the 19th century. It developed into a powerful basis for the Indian independence movement in the early 20th century. The city was included in Bombay State in 1947 after India gained its freedom. After the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement, the state of Maharashtra was established in 1960, with Bombay serving as its capital. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

India’s commercial, financial, and entertainment hub is Mumbai. It contributes 6.16% of India’s GDP, 25% of industrial output, 70% of maritime trade in India (Mumbai Port Trust and JNPT), and 70% of capital transactions to India’s economy, making it one of the top 10 commercial hubs in the world in terms of global financial flow. The city is home to significant financial institutions as well as the corporate headquarters of major Indian and international businesses. Some of India’s top scientific and nuclear institutes are also located there. The Bollywood and Marathi film industries are also based in the city. The business opportunities in Mumbai draw people from all around India to migrate there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
