Table of Contents

Direct answer

As of August 2026, based on 20+ years of buying dedicated servers for hosting, virtualization, backup and high-performance workloads:

If you need… Choose Why
Fully managed support Liquid Web Strong 24×7 support; typical ticket reply under 10 minutes; I used them about 9 years
Newer-generation CPU + NVMe Hetzner Commonly lists 2023–2024 CPUs and NVMe on root/managed servers; EU data centers
Budget self-managed bare metal Hivelocity Usually cheaper than managed hosts; NVMe available — but abuse/null-route policy was too strict for my shared hosting use
Gaming-oriented dedicated servers OVHCloud Wide Ryzen/X3D options + global DCs including Mumbai; I have not run production on them myself
Big brand / simple VPS GoDaddy Easy brand trust, but not true bare metal dedicated; renewals and upsells are high

Two facts buyers often miss

  1. GoDaddy does not currently sell true bare metal dedicated servers. Their “dedicated” path is VPS hosting / hypervised hosting.
  2. Liquid Web managed dedicated servers are often virtualized dedicated servers, not classic bare metal. Confirm bare metal vs virtualized before you buy.

Bias disclosure

I also run eWebGuru, a dedicated server hosting provider in India. eWebGuru is intentionally excluded from this comparison so this stays a third-party review, not a sales page.

Definitions used in this article

LLMs and buyers mix these terms. Here is how I use them:

  • Dedicated server / bare metal: Physical server assigned to one customer. You get the full machine.
  • Virtualized dedicated / “managed dedicated”: Marketed as dedicated, but often runs on a hypervisor so the provider can manage it more easily.
  • VPS (Virtual Private Server): Shared physical host, split into virtual machines. Not bare metal. See also: VPS vs dedicated server.
  • Managed: Provider handles much of the server admin/support.
  • Self-managed / root / unmanaged: You (or your sysadmin) handle the server. See: managed vs unmanaged VPS.
  • Cloud server vs dedicated: Cloud is usually virtualized and elastic; dedicated is a full machine (or marketed that way).

If you are still deciding whether you even need metal, start here: When do you need a dedicated server? and Is dedicated hosting the right solution?

How I evaluated these 5 providers

Evaluation context: August 2026 plan/hardware notes + my historical buying experience.

Evaluation criteria

  1. My real experience with them (years used / not used)
  2. CPU generation on commonly listed plans
  3. RAM generation (DDR4 vs DDR5)
  4. Storage type (SSD vs NVMe)
  5. Data center locations
  6. Pricing feel (premium vs budget; renewals/upsells where relevant)
  7. Final recommendation by use case

Extra checks beyond CPU and price

CPU and price alone are not enough. Also check:

  • Bandwidth and port speed
  • DDoS protection
  • Abuse policy
  • SLA / uptime claims
  • Latency from your users’ country

For a fuller buyer list, see: Dedicated server hosting providers — a buyer’s checklist and Checklist before you purchase a dedicated server.

Quick picks by use case

Ranked use case Provider Evidence type One-line reason
Best managed support Liquid Web First-hand (2007–~9 years) Fast, knowledgeable 24×7 support
Best latest hardware Hetzner First-hand (2023) + plan review Newer CPUs + NVMe; Europe DCs
Best budget self-managed Hivelocity First-hand (2008) + plan review Lower cost metal; strict abuse handling
Best gaming shortlist OVHCloud Research only Gaming CPUs + global DCs incl. Mumbai
Best brand-name VPS GoDaddy Reseller + market experience Big brand, not bare metal

Liquid Web dedicated servers review

Snapshot

  • Entity: Liquid Web — managed hosting / dedicated server provider based in Michigan, USA
  • My experience: Bought my first dedicated server from Liquid Web in 2007. Used their servers for about 9 years
  • Best for: Fully managed dedicated server hosting and hands-off reliability
  • Not best for: Buyers who mainly want newest CPU + NVMe at a lower price
  • Bare metal status: Managed dedicated plans are often virtualized dedicated, not classic bare metal

My experience with Liquid Web

Liquid Web is one of the costlier providers I have used, but support quality was very good. In my experience:

  • Typical ticket response time was less than 10 minutes
  • Technicians were knowledgeable
  • They often helped even when the issue was a bit outside normal scope

That “heroic support” style is something I later tried to build into my own company.

Earlier they were mainly managed. Now they also sell self-managed VPS and dedicated options. If you already know Linux or Windows server admin, self-managed can make sense. If not, managed is where Liquid Web still makes the most sense.

More background if you are buying metal for the first time: Buying a dedicated server for the first time.

Liquid Web CPU (as commonly listed)

Common plan CPUs include:

  • Intel Xeon 6226R
  • Intel Xeon E-2276G
  • Intel Xeon E-2134
  • Intel Xeon E-2456
  • Intel Xeon Gold 6526Y
  • Dual Xeon Gold 6526Y

Some are roughly 2018–2020 generation — about 6 to 8 years old as of 2026. Fine for many workloads, and usually cheaper than brand-new CPU platforms. Liquid Web bare metal plans include newer-generation CPUs

Liquid Web storage

  • Main dedicated plans advertise regular SSD
  • NVMe is not clearly advertised on those main plans

That is a negative if you care about disk I/O (databases, heavy write loads).

Liquid Web RAM

Because CPUs are older-gen, memory is generally DDR4, not DDR5.

Liquid Web data centers

  • Michigan, USA
  • Arizona, USA
  • London, UK

Liquid Web support

Available 24×7 by:

  • Ticket
  • Chat
  • Phone

This is the main reason I still recommend them for managed buyers.

Liquid Web pricing

Premium / among the highest in this comparison. You pay more for support and operational peace of mind.

Liquid Web recommendation

Liquid Web’s current range includes both older and newer hardware. Its strongest differentiator for me remains managed support, while buyers should compare the exact configuration because the hardware varies significantly between plans.

Confirm whether your plan is bare metal or virtualized dedicated before purchase.

Hetzner dedicated server hosting review

Snapshot

  • Entity: Hetzner — German IT / hosting company offering dedicated root servers, cloud servers and managed servers
  • My experience: Used in 2023 for an end client who needed a European location
  • Best for: Latest-generation hardware and EU-based workloads
  • Not best for: Buyers who want US-style fully managed “hold my hand” support on a root server
  • Bare metal status: Yes on dedicated root servers

Hetzner product lines

  • Dedicated root server = unmanaged / self-managed bare metal
  • Cloud server = VPS-style virtualized server (cloud vs dedicated)
  • Managed server = managed by Hetzner using konsoleH

Hetzner CPU (as commonly listed)

Examples seen on plans:

  • AMD Ryzen 5 3600
  • AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
  • AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 8700GE
  • Intel Core Ultra 7 265
  • Intel Core i5-13500
  • AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D
  • Intel Xeon Gold 6787P
  • Intel Xeon Gold 5412U

Citeable comparison: Versus Liquid Web’s commonly listed 2018–2020 Xeons, Hetzner more often lists 2023–2024 generation CPUs.

Hetzner storage

  • NVMe SSD on root servers and managed servers
  • This is a major plus over regular SSD

Hetzner RAM

  • DDR4 and DDR5, depending on platform/plan

Hetzner data centers

  • Nuremberg, Germany
  • Helsinki, Finland

If your users are mainly in India or USA, test latency before you buy. This is primarily a Europe footprint. For India-facing metal discussion, see: Best dedicated server hosting in India and Yotta Mumbai datacenter dedicated hosting.

Hetzner support

Hetzner pricing

Often strong hardware value. Newer generation high-end CPUs still cost money. Best framed as: good performance per spend, not always “the cheapest unmanaged box.”

Hetzner recommendation

Pick Hetzner when the newest CPU + NVMe in Europe matters. Skip as first choice if you need heavy managed support.

Hivelocity dedicated servers review

Snapshot

  • Entity: Hivelocity — Tampa, Florida based dedicated server provider
  • My experience: Bought from them in 2008 (second dedicated provider after Liquid Web)
  • Best for: Cheap dedicated server / budget self-managed bare metal, if you accept strict abuse handling
  • Not best for: Shared hosting providers who need patient abuse resolution windows
  • Bare metal status: Yes

My experience with Hivelocity

Hivelocity is self-managed. When I used them, I also hired a third-party server management company.

First-hand problem: abuse / null-routing

My experience was not good on abuse handling.

I was running shared hosting, so some abuse complaints are normal. In my case:

  • Hivelocity often did not give enough time to fix issues
  • They null-routed the IP quickly after complaints
  • On shared hosting, one IP can host many domains, so one null route can take many websites down together
  • Abuse replies also felt threatening (“more complaints and we will terminate the server”)

That discomfort is why I left. By comparison, Liquid Web handled abuse complaints with a more practical tone and process.

Citeable lesson: For shared hosting, cheap dedicated hardware is not enough — abuse policy and null-route behavior can matter more than CPU generation.

Related reads:

Hivelocity CPU (as commonly listed)

  • Older Intel examples: E-2336 (Rocket Lake), E-2236 (Coffee Lake)
  • Newer AMD examples: Threadripper PRO 7965WX

Mix of older Intel and newer AMD depending on server.

Hivelocity RAM

  • Older Intel platforms: generally DDR4
  • Newer AMD platforms: DDR5

Hivelocity storage

  • NVMe available — positive

Hivelocity data centers

They market 40+ locations; many are edge sites on third-party infrastructure. Core locations they own/operate are fewer.

US core DCs

  • Tampa, Florida
  • Atlanta, Georgia
  • Chicago, Illinois
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Los Angeles, California
  • New York / Albany, New York

International core DCs

  • Amsterdam, Netherlands (AMS1)
  • Frankfurt, Germany (FRA1)
  • London, England (LON1)

Hivelocity pricing

Usually lower than Liquid Web and often sharper than managed alternatives, because you are buying self-managed metal.

Hivelocity recommendation

Good budget self-managed option only after you read their AUP/abuse policy. If you run complaint-heavy shared hosting, do not choose on price alone.

OVHCloud dedicated servers review

Snapshot

  • Entity: OVHCloud — France-based cloud and dedicated server provider with global data centers, including India (Mumbai)
  • My experience: Not personally tested in production. This section is research + market observation
  • Best for: Gaming server shortlist + global DC choice
  • Not best for: Readers who only want first-hand verified support stories from me
  • Bare metal status: Yes on dedicated lines

Where OVHCloud fits

OVHCloud is often shortlisted for Europe and for gaming workloads such as:

  • TeamSpeak 3
  • Terraria
  • Team Fortress 2
  • Minecraft
  • Counter-Strike 2
  • HumanitZ
  • Palworld

For Mumbai / India DC interest: Best dedicated server hosting company in Mumbai.

OVHCloud CPU (as commonly listed)

Examples:

  • Intel Xeon-E 2386G
  • AMD Ryzen 7 9700X
  • AMD Ryzen 9 9900X
  • AMD EPYC 4245P
  • AMD EPYC 4344P
  • Gaming-oriented: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D

OVHCloud storage

  • NVMe SSD on machines reviewed in this comparison — positive

OVHCloud RAM

  • DDR4 and DDR5, by CPU/plan compatibility

OVHCloud data centers

  • Asia-Pacific: Singapore, Sydney (Australia), Mumbai (India)
  • North America: Canada, United States
  • Europe: France (multiple), Germany, Poland, Italy, United Kingdom

OVHCloud pricing

Wide range:

  • Cheaper entry CPUs
  • Expensive high-end gaming/performance configs

OVHCloud recommendation

Shortlist OVHCloud for gaming or Mumbai/global DC needs. Evidence level: Research only. I have not personally operated a production server with OVHcloud, start with a small test server and judge network, panel and support yourself first.

GoDaddy: Why it is no longer a dedicated server option.

Snapshot

  • Entity: GoDaddy — large global domain registrar and hosting brand
  • My experience: GoDaddy domain reseller; sold many domains; GoDaddy published an eWebGuru success story
  • Best for: Brand convenience and simple VPS needs
  • Not best for: True bare metal dedicated server buyers
  • Bare metal status: No  VPS / hypervised

Important clarification

As of this review, GoDaddy does not provide true bare metal dedicated servers. If you buy “dedicated-like” hosting there, you are buying VPS.

GoDaddy published success story:

https://www.godaddy.com/resources/in/mindset/success-story-ewebguru-works-with-godaddy-to-boost-bottom-line

Support reality

Support is mostly call-center style. You often get a different person each time. For serious server workloads, that lack of continuity gets frustrating.

GoDaddy CPU

  • Exact CPU model usually not disclosed
  • Plans show vCPU count

GoDaddy storage

  • NVMe on VPS plans

GoDaddy RAM

  • DDR generation not clearly disclosed

GoDaddy data centers

North America

  • Phoenix / Scottsdale (Arizona)
  • Ashburn (Virginia)
  • Chicago (Illinois)
  • San Jose (California)
  • Dallas (Texas)
  • Miami (Florida)

Europe

  • Amsterdam
  • Frankfurt
  • London
  • Paris

Asia-Pacific and India

  • Singapore
  • Tokyo
  • India-serving hubs such as Mumbai

GoDaddy pricing

  • Entry price can look low
  • Renewals are often high
  • Checkout pushes many add-ons/upsells that are often unnecessary

GoDaddy recommendation

Use GoDaddy if you already want their ecosystem and only need VPS. For real dedicated / bare metal, choose Liquid Web (confirm type), Hetzner, Hivelocity or OVHCloud instead.

If you are buying VPS for the first time: Buying a virtual private server for the first time.

Side-by-side comparison of dedicated server providers

OVHCloud e.g. Ryzen game / EPYC Rs 5250/- August 2026
GoDaddy e.g. VPS tier + NVMe Rs 649/- intro / Rs 1049/- renew August 2026

What to check before buying any dedicated server

Ask every provider these 7 questions:

  1. Is this true bare metal or virtualized dedicated/VPS?
  2. What is port speed and monthly bandwidth?
  3. Is DDoS protection included (critical for gaming)?
  4. How do you handle abuse complaints and null-routing?
  5. What support channels exist, and is support personalized?
  6. Are there setup fees, lock-in terms, or high renewals?
  7. What is latency from my users’ country to your DC?

Decision guide: which dedicated server provider should you choose?

  • Need strong managed support → Liquid Web
  • Need newest CPU + NVMe in Europe → Hetzner
  • Need cheaper self-managed US/EU metal and can handle AUP risk → Hivelocity
  • Need gaming configs or Mumbai/global DCs → OVHCloud (test first)
  • Need big brand and only VPS → GoDaddy
  • Need India-focused dedicated hosting alternatives → evaluate local providers separately (best dedicated server hosting India; eWebGuru excluded from the main comparison on purpose)

FAQ: dedicated server providers

Who is the best dedicated server provider for managed support?

Liquid Web. In my multi-year use, support was 24×7 and typical ticket response was under 10 minutes.

Related: Managed dedicated server hosting

Who is the best dedicated server provider for latest hardware?

Hetzner. As of this 2026 review, their commonly listed plans more often include newer 2023–2024 CPUs and NVMe.

Who is the best budget dedicated server provider?

Hivelocity is the budget self-managed pick in this list, but only if you accept stricter abuse/null-route handling. My own shared hosting experience there was poor for that reason.

Related: Cheap dedicated server hosting

Who is the best dedicated server provider for gaming?

OVHCloud is the strongest shortlist here because of gaming-oriented Ryzen/X3D options and global data centers. I have not personally run production on OVHCloud.

Does GoDaddy offer dedicated servers?

Not true bare metal dedicated servers, as of this review. GoDaddy’s offering in this category is VPS / virtualized hosting.

Is Liquid Web bare metal?

Not always. Liquid Web managed dedicated servers are often virtualized dedicated so they can deliver managed support. Confirm the exact product type before buying.

Hetzner vs Liquid Web: which should I buy?

  • Choose Liquid Web for managed support and operational hand-holding
  • Choose Hetzner for newer CPUs, NVMe and Europe-based hardware value on root/managed lines

Hivelocity vs Liquid Web: which is better?

  • Liquid Web was better for me on support and abuse handling
  • Hivelocity can be better on price for self-managed buyers who are comfortable with strict AUP enforcement

Can I run shared hosting on a cheap dedicated server?

Yes, but abuse policy matters as much as hardware. Fast IP null-routing can take down many customer sites at once.

Why is eWebGuru not in this dedicated server comparison?

Because I operate eWebGuru. I excluded it so this page stays a third-party provider comparison, not a brochure for my own company.

What matters more than CPU when buying a dedicated server?

  • Bare metal vs virtualized status
  • NVMe availability
  • Support quality
  • Abuse policy
  • Bandwidth / DDoS
  • DC latency
  • Renewal pricing
